Sweet Faces

I try (emphasis on the "try") to take the kids Yearbook cover photos around June or July so that their faces are right in the middle - you know how fast they change. If I use a January photo, they look nothing like they did in December and vice versa. So Jonathan had his boys' weekend and I took the kids out for a photo shoot.
I got some great ones.
But how could I NOT when the subjects are so darn cute?
Or should I say, How could I not when I bribed them with toys from Walmart and we took the photos in the Walmart parking lot so they could SEE the prize the entire time.
Our Walmart is right next to the Boerne Visitor Center which is where we took the photos.
So lucky these two are mine.
Besides the toy-bribery, these two are in constant competition so if I told Ace that Lily Kate had a better smile, he'd turn up the wattage on his smile.
And below are the two that will be on the cover of their Yearbooks!
Lily Kate Evans (Age 3)
 Albert Carey Evans (Age 6)

Ace's 6th Camping Birthday Party

Kind of like Ace's birthday party, this post about it is belated.
Ace didn't get a birthday party back in March because...well...Mommy can't juggle tax season and birthday parties at the same time.  Luckily, Ace is VERY understanding and ALWAYS up for a party in his honor no matter the time of year.  So we threw a CAMPING themed party.
I wanted to buy a banner online but everything was $40+ and I was too last minute to receive anything in time. Desperation is the mother of inspiration. I found some chevron burlap ribbon and cut out letters (by hand, ugh), with a little super glue, wa-la!
I wanted to put some "camp signs" around so the kids and I bought some cheap wood at Home Depot, stained it and painted them. Yes, the kids helped me stain the wood. Brave? Stupid? Yes and Yes.
Pinterest was my best friend and inspired the cupcake with "fire" icing.  HEB totally came thru in the clutch. Some pirouettes, twix, rock candy and colored candles and we were in business. Might I add that I think the cake surrounded by cupcakes is just an awesome idea because the cake can be entirely one flavor and the cupcakes another...HEB is so smart.
As if this kid needs to wish for anything when he has everything!
My beef with birthday party sites and Pinterest is that they give great decoration ideas and ZERO ideas for games and activities which are what the kids really care about. So I put my imagination-cap on and here's what we did:
Oriental Trading Company had some backpacks that you color with a camping theme on them so we colored those.
We strapped on our colored backpacks and headed outside where we had hidden tons of plastic bugs and critters. The kids had to hunt for them and whoever had the most at the end got a prize. We literally did this 4 or 5 times. They loved it.
We went "fishing" for prizes (just like at school carnivals and trunk-or-treats). The prizes came out of the giant bags of goodies from Party City. 6 year olds love cheap junk. Works for me.
I let each party guest make their own pizza. Hey, we usually do it on Friday nights anyway so I figured the other kids would enjoy it as much as we normally do. Of course, we indulged too: chex mix, gummie bears, sour worms, rock candy and carmel + chocolate covered pretzels. Side note: I will never make JUST chocolate covered pretzels again.  The caramel is worth the trouble!
We also played musical "pillows" a billion times.  I got these iron-on transfers from KidsSweetTees from FaceBook. The kids also had to sit on them while we read "scary campfire stories." I searched for hours for stories that weren't too scary and EVERYTHING I found was terrifying or gross or too old.  5 Funny Frights was PERFECT but almost impossible to find online.
Silly boys. We attempted a sleepover but it was a total bust. The last boy gave up about 11:45 and his parents came to pick him up. Poor Ace. We will not be attempting another sleepover any time soon.
The party was extra special because Brookelyn and Braedyn happened to be in town and got to come. Brookelyn was master of the bug-hunt.
I actually saw the Mommy of one of the boys the other day and she said her little boy sleeps with his pillow every night. So sweet!  Next year, no birthday parties at home and definitely not two in one month! Although Ace really liked his summer birthday party.

Time for School!

School time again and both the Evans kids couldn't be more excited.
Ace is in Mrs. Rickman's 1st grade class.
These two photos are from meet the teacher night.
1st day obligatory photo. He was more excited about his new backpack than anything.
Not a tear. Not a "Mommy will you stay." Nothing.
Not even a goodbye really. Just a smile and I will take it!
Lily Kate's teachers are Mrs. Hineline...
...and Mrs. Applebee.
And she was MORE than ready to go to school today. I am in a panick because it's her first day in panties and I packed three changes of clothes just to be safe. My secret weapon is her dress. I told Lily Kate if she pee-peed on Dora (her undies have Dora on them) that she would have to take her dress off. She promised, "I not peep on Dora."
And here is Lils with her first homework project. She wanted the brown girl (who am I to object? but I did laugh). She wanted pink hair and a "princess dress." The mouth had to be purple and she needed "ballet shoes." Bossy britches.
I feel really fortunate with their teachers. Once again, the Lord takes care of this mommy.
Yeah for school!

Lily Kate's Mermaid 3rd Birthday Party

Lily Kate turned THREE!
After not seeing her little girlfriends all summer, Lily was ready to party. The entire week leading up to it, all she could talk about was her party.
Once I saw these mermaid skirts, the theme was locked in.  It wasn't too hard to convince Lily Kate that she wanted a mermaid party. Sparkly, check. Costume, check. Girly, check. It fit all of her requirements.
She perfected her mermaid posing before everyone got there.
The spread: fruit, turkey & pb&j sandwiches for the kids, chicken salad for the adults...
...every kind of Goldfish we could find...
...more cake than 4 little girls could ever eat...
...oyster cookies (the pearls are sixlets)...
...marshmallows dipped in blue candy melts, graham cracker crumbs, plus a goldfish...
...jello and gummy octopi...these were the favorite...
One of EVERYTHING, please.
For games we "went fishing", put sea creature stickers on their goody bags, filled containers with sand and made a HUGE mess in Lily's room.  The girls decided it was time to open presents and steathily ripped into everything with the help of one sneaky older brother.
Cora, Lily Kate, Naomi and Maddie had a squealing, girly good time.
I guess I should have seen it coming but 3 years flew so fast. As all kids with older siblings, everyone ELSE thinks she's older...mostly because she talks sooooo much.  But in my mind and in her's when she's in the mood, she is still my baby.  It was a Happy Birthday.

Picnic Time

So, I haven't blogged in awhile but ya got to pick back up somewhere (and of course this blog is being weird and not letting me type correctly, grrrrr).  Today was the annual James Avery picnic. The kids played Bingo and ruled the playground. It was super hot so, after some BBQ (and a blow-out diaper courtesy of Miss Cuteness), we headed home for naps and AC.

Now it's pizza and pool-time. Finishing out the summer on a good note.

Hula

I went to the mailbox this past week and got a huge blessing.  Without going through the entire shameful and traumatic story, we gave Hula to a weimaraner rescue in June of last year.  The rescue was very kind and accomodating.  It is not natural to give up a family member, not knowing if you will ever find out what becomes of them.

Well, this past week, I got a letter from the family that adopted Hula. To hear that she is loved and loving her new family is an amazing comfort.
Let it never be in doubt that the Lord takes care of animals.  I believe with my whole heart that He worked out every part of Hula's passage to this family (and there were several people involved). I am so thankful.

State Park

We got the bug to get outdoors
& get up off our duff
and finding a fun place to go
wasn't one bit tough.
We've got a state park really close
so we hopped into the car
a picnic lunch, a hike, a swing
and high was set the bar.
Although I look back on our trip
with amounts of great affection...
I wish we hadn't all brought home
a bad sinus infection! (Yuck)

Sleepy Lils

My mini miss is growing up
and growing makes her sleepy.
Saying "bye-bye" to my baby
makes me get all weepy.
Day-by-day I love her more
(I hope one day she knows)
and when I think it hits the roof
her cuteness-level grows.

Ace Starts Basketball

Ok B-ball, here we go.
Time to dribble, pass and throw.
Excited to start something new.
We hope he'll score a goal or two.
But should he not score even one...
...the true goal really is just fun.

Snow

Made Jonathan shush
as I listened with strain.
What could that be?
He said, "Kelly it's rain." (in a mighty sarcastic tone, if I may add)

Well, we don't get much;
I'd forgotten its sound.
 Good thing I keep Jonathan
"my genius" around.
 That very same day
just wouldn't you know
another rarity fell
that thing known as SNOW!
So I ran to the kids
Got them dressed...or, I TRIED,
slapped on their coats
and threw them outside.
 They threw up their hands
and stuck out their tongues,
& giggled and shouted
at the top of their lungs,
Of course, they got cold
and inside we did go.
Though it didn't last long
we enjoyed the snow!
